David J. Brobeck, Jr.
David J. Brobeck, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1970, and also admitted to the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, 9th Circuit. He co-founded the firm along with his former partner Byron J. Beam in 1986.
Mr. Brobeck is a graduate of the University of Southern California (B.A. in English 1966), and attended law school at California Western University School of Law in San Diego (J.D. 1969). He is a member of the State Bar of California, and has been a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates since 1981. He was the recipient of the George Francis Civility Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates in 2000. He is also a member of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel (ASCDC), Southern California Association of Hospital Risk Managers (SCAHRM), the Tort and Insurance Law section of the American Bar Association, and the Association of Surfing Lawyers. Mr. Brobeck has served as an arbitrator and Judge Pro Tem for the Orange County Superior Court on numerous occasions going back to 1977.
He has been a panelist for Continuing Education of the Bar Programs including “Fundamentals of Personal Injury Practice” (1988, 1989), “Preparing Witnesses for Deposition and Trial” (1984) and also served on the faculty in the Orange County Trial Advocacy Program sponsored by the Orange County Superior Court and Pepperdine University (1977-1979). In addition, Mr. Brobeck has spoken at numerous conferences and programs relating to one of his specialty areas, the defense of professional liability matters. These include presentations for the medical staff of South Coast Medical Center (Arbitration Agreements-the Pros and Cons, 1995), Conference for Paramedics at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach (“Liability of Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians”, 1986), presentations at Santa Ana College Nursing Program, and other lecture presentations to medical staff at various health care centers.
Mr. Brobeck has 43 years of experience handling cases involving personal injury, professional liability, governmental tort litigation and general civil litigation both in State and Federal Court. He has tried in excess of 100 Superior Court cases to verdict, winning defense verdicts in more than 90% of the cases. His governmental tort liability cases have included defense of law enforcement personnel, road design, premises liability, and employment-related litigation. In addition to representing hospitals and major medical centers, he has successfully defended a variety of complex medical malpractice claims for orthopedic surgeons, emergency room physicians, urologists, plastic surgeons, OB/GYN’s, general surgeons, pediatricians, and others. He has developed special expertise over the years in trying high exposure, catastrophic injury cases, and has earned an AV Preeminent rating with Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Brobeck resides in Dana Point with his wife of 47 years, and enjoys photography, mountain biking, surfing, and particularly family time with his children and four grandchildren.
